RAF Mildenhall 5th March 2013
I hadn't been to an airfield or air base for ages, in fact this was my first trip out in 2013 and the weather forecast was terrific so I headed for RAF Mildenhall. The morning was excellent with plenty of flying, both arrivals and departures. The afternoon was completely dead until about 16.30 when one of the SOG Combat Shadows started bashing the circuit. At this point the light was gorgeous! The weather was superb, blue skies all day, in fact it turned out to be the warmest day so far in 2013. I must admit it was great just being out and with that great smell of jet fumes. During my visit a couple of RAF Mildenhall based Boeing KC-135R Stratotankers flew together with an Evergreen International Boeing 747-446 N492EV which departed at about 10.15am, also arriving at 09.07am was a Pilatus PC-12 (U-28A) from the 27th SOW at Cannon AFB, it arrived as TROJAN 02, this rare aircraft left about half an hour later heading for Stuttgart. Departing a bit later in the morning was a Lockheed KC-130T Hercules, 164442 of VMGR 452 from Stewart ANGB, the other aircraft of note which arrived at about 12.15 was a Turkish Air Force C-160D Transall 69-036 of 222nd Filo. The Lockheed MC-130P Combat Shadow which rescued my afternoon was SHADOW 61, 65-0991 of the 67th SOS based at RAF Mildenhall.
As an added bonus all arrivals and departures were via Runway 11. This section contains 71 unique images taken during the day:
